Volunteering or working for a long period of time in a new culture is a challenging yet very rewarding experience. It will test your openness to new ideas, your flexibility and adaptability and will give you a wealth of experiences that could not be gained through regular employment. As anyone who has done it will tell you, it is the perfect way to learn a lot about yourself and the country in which you are working. Some partner organisations of UNA Exchange have a small number of long-term placements which offer this unique opportunity.

You could find yourself:

  • Planning educational activities to raise awareness about turtle protection in India
  • Working with school children at an environmental education centre in France
  • Supporting English language learning at a school in Russia
  • Working as part of a Ranger team improving trails in the Appalachian Mountains in the USA

Projects for longer than four months are quite rare, but they do exist! You should contact the UNA Exchange office if you are interested in this length of project. Alternatively, if you are aged between 18 and 30 you could look at the European Voluntary Service (EVS) programme; this is a fully funded programme offering many hundreds of longer-term opportunities, principally in European Union countries but other parts of the world are now included as well. Visit our EVS pages for more information.
