who wish to obtain an exact data on which
have been and what

means the Camino de Santiago in the
European culture and in its

people. The young people must come
motivated to collaborate with

the rehabilitation of the collective memory
through the recovery

of patrimony associated to the Camino de
Santiago and of the

recovery of the own Camino. Anyone to that,
mainly, desires to

learn a little more on historical
trans-border communications, on

old ways, the Pyrenees, mountain towns.
Anyone with desire to

work, to collaborate in the recovery of
exciting an historical

and cultural patrimony.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK.-

With respect to the work of cleaning and environmental

adjustment of the Camino de Santiago.

The task is focused in the technical
document guaranteed by the

Government of Aragón that was made under
the Direction of D.

Jose´ Luis Ona González:

DESCRIPTION OF THE TASKS

The denominated "Section V, subsection
2" is developed from the

Puente de Abajo (that is subsection 1) by
the left border of the

river. It is fitted in the base of the slope
that closes the

valley and its main technical element is
the retaining wall –

with rubblework – that conforms the own
layout of the Way of

Santiago.

The vegetation has grown extremely next to
the mentioned wall,

and has invaded the own way in some sections.
It would be come to

its grubbing and selectived prune, as done
in other campaigns:

without eliminating the vegetation in its
totality. After the

cleaning, those fallen
"mampuestos" given off from the wall would

be replaced.

Concretely the technical task will consist
of:

Cleaning of sweepings, stones, and other
materials in all the

section Canfranc Pueblo-Puente de Abajo-
Villanúa.

Grubbing and selective prune of the
invading vegetation.

Cleaning, discovery and putting in value of
possible lateral

walls, paved with stones or other
structures that could appear.

Provisional consolidation if it were
necessary.

Cleaning and classification of possible
archaeological rest

founded.

Elaboration of the corresponding report on
the historical

content.

Emission of press news when it corresponds.

With respect to the work of cleaning and adjustment of the

two Búnkeres of the "associated P
Line" to the Camino de

Santiago.

The "P Line" is formed by a set of hundred of Bunkers that

the pro-Franco dictatorship constructed
with prisoners throughout

the Pyrenees once the allies in the Second
World War gained

positions to the Germans. They are strong
constructions,

perfectly merged due its finished is made
of grass, earth and

stones gathered in the same places where
they were constructed.

Many kilometers of the 8,800 totals that we
know are made like

this, are in the Valley of Canfranc.

At the present time they are in phase of
inventory and are in the

open and in bad conditions. They constitute
the clasp of a

military architecture that has not been
well valued and that

nevertheless gathers enormous didactic
possibilities and of

learning from all the points of view.

Concretely the technical task will consist of:

Cleanning the accesses of the North and
South Bunkers in Peña

Caída, its footpaths of entrance.

Grubbin and selective prunning the invading
vegetation.

Cleaning, discovering and putting in value
of paved with stones

or other structures that could appear.
Provisional consolidation

with rubblework.

Signaling of both búnqueres.

Elaboration of the corresponding report on
the historical

content.

Emission of press news when it corresponds.

PROGRAMME OF ACTIVITIES.-

The Directive Equipment of the Work Camp
will make a list of

activities to make, that will be
presented/displayed to the

participants in the course of the first day
of stay. The

definitive program will be decided between
the participants and

the equipment with the idea that this
system serves to involve

from the very beginning and therefore to
motivate them to

participate in all the definitive program.

Our system of operation comes from the idea
that the Work Camp is

an activity of Education in the Laisure
Time and although the

participants are of legal age, we did not
resign to infect to

them of our educative intentionalities and
therefore of different

attitudes that we woulk like them to
acquire during these 20

days.

For that reason and taking advantage of the
surroundings where we

are, the proposed activities are within the
educative objectives

that we have mentioned, emanating directly
from them.

The following challenge is to make them
attractive so that the

participants animate themselves, take advantage
of them and that

all together obtain the maximun
accomplishment of our objectives.

We are going to enumerate the activities
that will provided to

the group.

Activities of Environmental Education:
walks, environmental

interpretation, readings of landscape,
animals, plants,

geomofology, anthropology.

Activities of Treking: two treckings by the
zone of Channel of IP

and Roya-Anayet Channel. Evening treckings:
Gabardito, Coll de

Ladrones.

Knowledge of the populations of the Valley
of Canfranc and Valle

of Aspe: Canfranc, Villanúa, Castiello,
Jaca, Urdos and Bedous.

Mountain sports: School of Scaling,
direction, cartography, etc.

Laisure activities: celebrations, evenings,
dinner services.

Formation activities: debates on the life
in Pyrenean and the

influence of the Camino de Santiago, the
Historical and Artistic

Patrimony, the influence of the man in
Means…

We understand this action like an activity
with young people of

legal age, without for that reason it has
to be losen the global

and educative character. Although the
complementary activities

are optative, we will try that all the
participants make them.

For that, the first day, once made the
presentations and made

some activity of knowledge of the
participants, this proposal of

activities is introduced in order to be
decided with the

participants, by consensus, and therefore,
by means of a personal

contribution of particular interests on
formation, sport

activities, laisure activities, etc. By
doing this, it is able to

make a program in which everybody has
certain protagonism and

therefore everybody is responsible. By this
way too all the

participants make all the activities and
therefore the group

atmosphere is little by little more more
and more favorable. To

make this program, supposes a greater
degree of active

participation.

In the shadow of the Road to Santiago,
various Romanesque

monasteries and hermitages appeared, which
makes the area rich in

artistic content. In Estella, San Pedro de
la R£a (Cistercian

style), the Palace of the Kings of Navarre
(today the Gustavo de

Maeztu Museum), the Closter of Santo
Domingo, or the Eunate

Church confirm this.

Continuing the route towards La Rioja we
encounter the

magnificent Irache Monastery, in Ayegui,
and half way there, in

Los Arcos, announced by its 16th century tower, the Church of

Santa Mar¡a. We go through Torres del R¡o,
with its singular Holy

Sepulchre and soon we arrive at the
monumental town of Viana.

Full of history, this town offers us works
such as the baroque

Town Hall of the Church of Santa Mar¡a,
with its gothic and

renaissance fa‡ade. The changeable and
irregular nature of Tierra

Estella boasts exuberant plantlife, in places such as Riezu,

known as the place that houses the source
of the river Ubagua. We

can also choose to walk through oak, holm
oak or gall oak trees

in Valeall¡n, Zudaire, Eulate or the
impressive Aguilar de Cod‚s

mountain range.

Description of Workcamp:

REGION.- Region of País Vasco. Province of
Alava.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK.- For the moment the
work to be carried out

will be aimed at meeting the following main
objectives:

From a scientific view point, the most
relevant point will be get

to know, in as much detail as possible, all
about a middle to

upper class large urban dwelling, from the
height of the Roman

Empire until towards its end.

From a didactical point of view, and due to
its major

architectural value and possibilities, it
will be a case of

making a whole home visible and
understandable.

This will be done using the following
methodology:

An archaeological excavation with thorough
archaeological

documentation (current state, extensions,
explorations).

Identification of the dwelling’s lay-out

Consolidation and "museumisation"
work.

PARTICIPANTS PROFILE.- When enroling,
participants should show a

certificate proving they have or are
studying Humanities, History

or Archaeology.

A BRIEF ASSESMENT OF THE IRUÑA/VELEIA
SITE.- On the Arkiz spur,

surrounded by the Zadorra river and between
the modern-day towns

of Villodas and Trespuentes(Iruña de Oca,
Alava), a great

fortified settlement or oppidum, belonging
to

the group of Caristios, was to be found in
the first millennium

b.c. It was one of the largest settlements
of our Iron Age and

may have covered over 30 hectares. Its
privileged location and

its human potential meant that at the
beginning of our times it

was chosen by the Romans to build a city
called Veleia. In fact,

this is the only city as such in existence
in the Roman era in

what is now the Basque Country.

The city of Veleia was helped by the fact
that it was near the

Astorga-Bordeaux road, the main land route
to cross the Basque

Country in Roman times. Products from all
the corners of the

roman Empire (Bizkaia, the Rioja, Gaul,
Italy, Germania and

Africa, etc.) came to the city which became
a centre for delivery

and redistribution of goods. Veleia´s
importance increased during

the initial centuries a.d. and covered an
area of around 80

hectares with hundreds of domus or urban
dwellings and also

public buildings such as a theatre, thermal
baths, a forum,

temples, etc.

Towards the end of the 3rd – beginning of
the 4th century a.d.,

the city had a large wall, measuring over
1,5 km. built around it

which even enclosed a hamlet of over 11
hectares. This is the

late roman wall of Veleia, the largest
architectural construction

of the roman era in the Basque Country and
one of the most

important in the north of Spain. The city
was abandoned as such

towards the end of the 5th century a.d.

Iruña/Veleia is like a huge historical
archive covering over 1500

years of our early history. It is a
well-conserved archaeological

archive of which a lot still remains to be
discovered. The site´s

scientific potential is tremendous and its
potential as tourist

site is quite clear as soon as the value of
its remains are

realised and it is "museumised".

PROPOSAL FOR AN INTERNATIONAL WORKCAMP.-
The idea behind setting

up an international work camp in
Iruña/Veleia is to:

Offer youngsters the possibility of
collaborating on a major

archaeological research programme which
will become one of the

Basque Country’s most emblematic sites.

Obtain direct experience of some of the
main archaeological field

procedures and techniques.

Get to know a little bit more about the
Basque Country’s past and

cultural heritage. To do this we have
prepared a programme of

activities (every day from Monday-Friday):
based on

archaeological excavation and structure
consolidation tasks. All

with the supervision of professional
archaeologists.

The activities programme held every
afternoon will included

teaching and training activities (an
approach to archaeological

techniques and materials and their basic
processing: talks and

seminars on Iruña/Veleia, its historical
and cultural context).

These will be led and co-ordinated by
professional archaeologists

and other specialists members of the site’s
research team.

Description of Workcamp:

REGION.- Region of Pais Vasco. Province of

DESCRIPTION OF WORK.- The Santa Apolonia
Chapel is situated in

the district of Santa Apolonia de Iurreta,
in the neighbourhood

of Orozketa. It forms part of the
municipality’s list of

religious architecture, and is one of the
ten chapels in this

list.

It is popularly known as Santa Apolonia,
even though its original

name is San Julián de Arandia, and the
first mention of this

chapel dates back to the year 1075
according to the "Arandiako

monastegia" document. Initially no
traces were found of the 11th

century to which it belongs, but in 1986
while its interior was

being restored, remains of a necropolis
were discovered inside

the chapel, mostly bone remains.

Over the years it has undergone different
restorations. In 1747

one of the chapel walls was rebuilt, and a
few years later, in

1760, the floor was restored.

However, the vicissitudes of history have
shown that it was not

until the end of the 19th century in 1893,
after 11 accidents,

that the real renovation took place, when
the chapel was rebuilt

and extended.

It celebrates its feast day on the 9th of
February, on Santa

Apolonia’s day.

The inside of the exterior walls has
recently been restored, so

the restoration of their exterior is being
considered, to enable

this chapel to continue forming part of the
municipality’s

history and artistic patrimony.

The restoration work involves:

Chipping the walls’ exterior

Rejoining the exterior walls with cement
mortar

OTHER ACTIVITIES.- The activity team will
prepare a series of

activities so that participants on the
project get to know

something more about the culture and the
habits of the Basque

Country. The team will send the programme
directly to the

participants who, if they wish, can make

Description of Workcamp:

REGION.- Region of Pais Vasco. Province of
Vizcaya.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK.- The road comes from
Olabarri and heads

close to the place where the Isasi estate
would be, crossing a

stream over a small bridge. In this area
the road comes to a

junction, which leads to the church of
Andra Mari de Elexalde

(Romanesque, C.13) and at this point its
paving is different to

the previous section. The type of road from
Olabarri does in fact

allude to the 16th and 17th centuries, with
a central strip of

narrow slabs placed lengthways along the
road and small stone

paving perpendicular to the centre of the
road which gives it a

somewhat unusual appearance, technically
known as "fishbone" and

which is very rarely found in our
historical land.

For its part, the road leading to Andra
Mari has a cavity made up

of two lateral strips of normal-sized
stones and filled with tiny

little stones. This type of road, known as
elizbide in popular

speech, linked rural neighbourhoods and
estates with the

surrounding churches and chapels.

While it is true that documents from the
15th century mention a

road that leads from Durango to Bilbao,
passing by the Berna

house-tower, we have no documentary evidence
regarding the

highway to Bilbao from Durango and Arratia
in the municipal area

of Galdakao. Nevertheless, we do have
cartographic data taking us

back to the 17th century, the time when one
may talk of roads in

the strict sense of the word, i.e. organisation
and planning of

the mainland road networks, and the time
when the new Bilbao to

Durango road was opened.

In the 18th century, building conditions
were already

pre-established and road regulations were
similar all over the

Peninsula. The cavity measurements were
widened and the interior

was prepared using several layers that were
silted using a cover

of medium-sized irregular stones which were
placed in an

irregular way over the central space formed
by the lateral

strips.

ACTION PROPOSALS

Locating the route

Monitor the road to find out, as reliably
as possible, its route

and the points where remains of its
structure may be seen.

Cleaning and repair

Clean the road in order to gain access to
all the information it

can offer us, such as size and construction
systems, of both the

road surface and the cavity. It would also
be advisable to

restore and repair it, but not rebuild it
as our intention is to

maintain the patrimonial element and not
replace it with a new

construction.

Description of the located elements and
topographic survey

a)
Graphically document the located elements and record the

state they were found in as well as the
action that will be taken

on them.

b)
Site the located elements (in this case; road, bridge and

possible limekiln). It would be advisable
here to draw up a

topographic survey of the road in order to
determine the contours

it goes through.

Drafting the report

Drafting the detailed report of the steps taken and the

obtained results (detailed description of the patrimonial

elements and their location, cartography, related documents

and as far as possible, oral testimonies).

Recovery and use

This point must be considered and developed
by the Galdakao Town

Council itself in the light of the obtained
results and the

issued report, and aimed at both the
defence and protection of

the patrimonial elements on which work has
been carried out, as

well as opening an alternative
leisure-cultural area within the

municipal limits.

OTHER ACTIVITIES.- The activity team will
prepare a series of

habits of the Basque

Country. The team will send the programme

widen it.

These activities will be carried out every
afternoon and at the

the strict sense of the word, i.e.
organisation and planning of

the mainland road networks, and the time
when the new Bilbao to

Durango road was opened.

In the 18th century, building conditions
were already

pre-established and road regulations were
similar all over the

Peninsula. The cavity measurements were
widened and the interior

was prepared using several layers that were
silted using a cover

of medium-sized irregular stones which were
placed in an

irregular way over the central space formed
by the lateral

strips.

ACTION PROPOSALS

Locating the route

Monitor the road to find out, as reliably
as possible, its route

and the points where remains of its
structure may be seen.

Cleaning and repair

Clean the road in order to gain access to
all the information it

can offer us, such as size and construction
systems, of both the

road surface and the cavity. It would also
be advisable to

restore and repair it, but not rebuild it
as our intention is to

maintain the patrimonial element and not
replace it with a new

construction.

Description of the located elements and
topographic survey

a)
Graphically document the located elements and record the

state they were found in as well as the
action that will be taken

on them.

b)
Site the located elements (in this case; road, bridge and

possible limekiln). It would be advisable
here to draw up a

topographic survey of the road in order to
determine the contours

it goes through.

Drafting the report

Drafting the detailed report of the steps taken and the

obtained results (detailed description of the patrimonial

elements and their location, cartography, related documents

and as far as possible, oral testimonies).

Recovery and use

This point must be considered and developed
by the Galdakao Town

Council itself in the light of the obtained
results and the

issued report, and aimed at both the
defence and protection of

the patrimonial elements on which work has
been carried out, as

well as opening an alternative
leisure-cultural area within the

municipal limits.

OTHER ACTIVITIES.- The activity team will
prepare a series of

activities so that participants on the
project get to know

something more about the culture and the

widen it.

CAT01-
TRAMUNTANA 16/7-29/7

 GIRONA ENVI 25 VOLS

This
project will take place at the Natural Park of Cap de Creus (Creus Cape). One
of the most interesting aspects of the cape is its geological formation, which
is easily visible as the majority of the cape consists of bare rock. Phenomen
such as metamorphism, folding and fracturing can be seen, giving us an insight
into the evolution of the landforms of the early palaezoic period in this
region of Catalunya. The rivers and streams that drain the zone are short and
only carry water after occasional heavy rains. At some points, though, rock
pools remain. The historical and cultural heritage of the Creus Cape adds to
its environmental value. There are a large number of prehistoric dolmens, that
of la Creu d’en Corbatella, at Roses, being particularly well-known. Submerged
in the waters of the zone is a valuable archeological legacy of shipwrecks from
the period of the Roman Empire.

WORK:
It consists in the cooperation with the Natural Park of Cap de Creus monitoring
the state of coastal fauna, as well as in the recovery of old rural paths in
the area. At the same time, we will develop tasks like:

1.
To clean and pick up
rubbish from several beaches in the area and trekking paths.

2.
To draw the trekking
paths on a map for publishing.

3.
To renove several
fountains, which time ago were used as pleasant zones.

4.
The follow-up of the
marine fauna.

5.
To work together with
the village population

fact still the only tourist here. Unlike the boom of the tourism Selva de Mar
conserved more or less its identity. During the main season and at the weekends
live here, however, a grand number of holiday visitors. But a lot of them are
of village origin and renovated the houses of the village respectfully.

If
