apply for projects

There are different application processes depending on the type of project you are interested in doing.  Please read this bit carefully to make sure you fill in the right application.

- I want to do a short-term project in Europe, North America, Japan or South Korea.

You need to apply for a Main Programme project.  You can apply for one right now if you want to!  See the section on Main Programme applications below for more info.

- I want to do a longer-term project (MTV project) in Europe, North America, Japan or South Korea.

The application process for this is the same as for short term projects.  See the Main Programme applications section below.

- I want to do a project in Asia, Africa or Latin America.

These projects are part of our North South programme.  You can't apply for a North South project until you have been on one of our North South Orientation weekend in Cardiff.  See the calendar page to find out when the next Orientation weekend is, or the section on applying for a North South project below for further information.

If you decide to become a member you will not only receive all the latest news from us, but also get to join a project for less. To join, download a membership form and return it to us with the annual fee of 10 pounds students/unwaged, and 15 pounds waged.

Main Programme (Europe, North America, Japan, South Korea)

Once you have found the project(s) you are interested in you can apply with an application form (VEF).

You can apply directly for projects in Europe, North America, Japan and South Korea, using this form.  You can also apply for MTV projects with the same form

Important! For projects in Africa, Latin America or Asia (excluding projects in Japan and South Korea), you need to attend a North South Orientation weekend before you apply.  Please see the instructions for North South Applications (below)

You CANNOT apply for a North South project using these application forms.

Although we do accept hard copy applications please apply electronically, if at all possible. We specify this for several reasons. Firstly it's more environmentally friendly, but also, it is easier and faster as we can forward your application directly to our partner, wherever in the world they are. Please do send your payment at the same time, as we are unable to confirm your application until we receive your payment.

To apply electronically you should:

1. Download the membership form and the electronic Volunteer Exchange Form (VEF) by clicking the links. Make sure you carefully read the conditions on the part 2 of the application form.

2. Decide whether or not you would like to become a member of UNA Exchange. Joining UNA Exchange membership for a year costs 10 pounds if you are a student or unwaged, 15 pounds if you are waged. To become a member you should print out and complete the membership form and post it back to us with the appropriate fee, cheque payable to UNA Exchange. Members pay a reduced project fee of 110 pounds instead of 130 pounds.  You can join as a member at the same time as applying for a project.

3.  Fill in part 1 of the VEF on your computer and email it back to [email protected].  You should give as much information as possible. It is very important that you include details of the Project Code, Project Name and Dates, for each project you apply for.  This information is available on the database of projects, accessible through the Search Page. In some cases the partner organisations have to choose between several applications so the more you write the better your chance of getting a place. You should try to list at least three project choices as projects do become full. You only need to give your passport number if you will require an official invitation in order to obtain a visa to travel to the project.

4. Print out and fill in part 2 of the application form in black ink and clear BLOCK CAPITALS.

5. Complete the checklist to confirm that you have taken all the necessary steps.  Dont forget to sign the form!

6. Return part 2 of the application form by post to the address below together with:

  • A cheque or postal order payable to UNA Exchange for the project fee and membership fee if applicable. If your choices have different fees you should pay the highest fee on application, any difference will be refunded as necessary.

We will inform you when your place on a project is confirmed, this should usually be within 10 days of receiving your completed application.

If we are unable to place you on any of the projects you chose we will contact you to try and find an alternative. If we are unable to place you on any projects we will refund the project fee.

To apply by post you should:

Wales Programme

Anyone presently resident in the UK can apply directly to UNA Exchange to participate on a project in Wales. To do this complete an application form (Volunteer Exchange Form).  You can then return this to us with the project fee of 50 pounds (cheques payable to UNA Exchange).

You can also become a member of UNA Exchange at the same time. Volunteers who are not resident in the UK need to contact one of our partner organisations in their home country. You can search for your nearest partner organisation on partners page.

If you are an international volunteer coming to Wales to take part in a UNA Exchange project, you might like to take a look at our Wales Guidebook. It is full of interesting and useful information on Wales and volunteering with UNA Exchange, from facts about the coutry, tips on travelling in the UK and recommended hostels, to a guide to Welsh pronounciation, some of our more unusual traditions and the longest place-name in Europe! Click here to download the guide.

There are also opportunities to lead projects in Wales, go to the leaders page for more details.

Contact us at [email protected] if you are unable to access this file and we will send it by email or post.
