Medium Term Volunteering
leading projects

EVS long term

EVS -European Voluntary Service- is open to anyone aged 18-25 who is living within the EU. There are thousands of projects to choose from in more than 25 countries. Each volunteer works full time alongside local staff, sometimes as the only international volunteer with an organisation. This makes it a great way to gain skills relating to the work whilst speaking another language. Living independently in a different country means that you develop personally and are ready to face the future. The variety of projects available means there is something to suit everyone: caring for wildlife on a Greek island, or tutoring pupils at a training centre in Norway and many more between.

In return for commitment to the project, hard work and enthusiasm an EVS volunteer receives:

travel to and from the project

        food and accommodation

        pocket money

        relevant training

        support throughout the experience

        assistance and advice on return

The support of the European Commission means that all costs are covered. Of course the other benefits of being an EVS volunteer are not so easy to list. But you can be sure you will experience another country from the inside whilst supporting local development.

how does it work?

Each project is a partnership between the volunteer, his/her sending organisation at home, and the host organisation in the country of the project. You cannot apply directly to projects in the country you want to go to,  you need a sending organisation to help you find a project, apply for it and prepare. It can take up to 6 months to find a suitable placement and complete the application process so you should allow plenty of time. You will be invited to training with other volunteers before you go, and will have help planning your travel.

EVS for foreign volunteers in Wales

UNA Exchange co-ordinate a programme of EVS projects in Wales, bringing volunteers from across Europe for 6 -11 months to work with local organisations. This is an excellent way to support work in Welsh communities and add an intercultural element. A whole range of projects benefit from the involvement of EVS volunteers; current UNA Exchange volunteers are working on conservation, children's play projects, youth work and arts promotion.

We believe that it is important that European volunteers receive full support and supervision throughout their time in Wales. We have the knowledge and expertise for work with international volunteers and are able to help local organisations in hosting their volunteers. This also brings together EVS volunteers so they make friends and share experience.

If you think your organisation could benefit from hosting an EVS volunteer we can help establish the project, and complete the necessary applications. We will then recruit the volunteers and support both you and the volunteer from preparation through to final evaluation. Contact the office to find out if an EVS volunteer could help you.
